As the son of a missionary, Dr. Fontus was born in Port-a-Prince, Haiti in 1963. Now a US citizen, he is fluent in both French and English and has traveled extensively in Africa, Europe, Asia, the West Indies and the United States.

Dr. Fontus’ college education began as a pre-med student in The Dalles, Oregon (1981-83). From there he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota (1983-85) and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Howard University College of Medicine (1985-89). Dr. Fontus performed his residency at the University of Hawaii (1989-94).

His clinical experience began with FHP, Inc. in the Pacific Rim region (1994-96). He returned to Oregon in 1997 and served as General Surgeon for the Cottage Grove Hospital. Since 1998, Dr. Fontus has been in private practice in the Eugene/Springfield area as a General Surgeon.

Dr. Fontus is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is licensed to practice in Oregon. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Lane County Medical Society.

Over the years, Dr. Fontus has been very involved in volunteer efforts, both locally and internationally. After the Haiti earthquake in 2010 he organized two disaster relief medical teams and participated in one of the teams. Within the Eugene community, Dr. Fontus led the local chapter of ACT-SO, a NAACP-sponsored youth empowerment program, and served on the Citizens Review Board for the Eugene police. For these volunteer activities, he has been honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award from Lane County, and an Equity Community Award from the 4J School District.
